Biking up the hill

A poem by Gentry Stafford

Slowly I start, one pedal after another. Then
Building up, gaining on it, so begins my heart
Pounding, breaking up silence’s scream
My legs cartoonish, flailing up and down
Darkness begins to flood my world
The wind grasps at me desperately trying to pull me away from the pain
My legs scream for mercy, burning down to the bone
Their charred ashes intertwining in the air stinging my nostrils
Yet still I push harder into the pane
Then it shatters, the glass not shearing into me
But into the darkness, unveiling the world's colors one at a time
My legs push harder with ease
Leaving my bike behind
The mockingbird sings
My heart beats the drums
And excitement dances through my body
Even the wind hums along
Ever so delighted by this song
But Alas, the bike catches up to me
Barely I grip on, as my feet search for its lost pedals
Blown away in the wind
My bike now carrying me faster than I can keep up
The world rushing past
New sights flickering all around me
Balance lost, as I sway
Color blasting me back as my is bike propelled forward
Screams emit, terrified yet joyous
But then the wind overcomes my eyes
And lifts me, as I soar, tearing through freedom.
