Okie Oktober: Halloween Contest
Okie Modern is hosting its first-ever writing contest. And it’s scary…
BOO!
I hope you're here to scare! Okie Modern is hosting our first-ever writing contest: "Okie Oktober." From September 10th-October 25th, we will be accepting submissions of scary stories, broadly defined. We want your creatures, vampires, ghouls, monsters, etc, -- whatever scares ya, we wanna see it!
This contest will help us raise money for Okie Modern. All contestants must pay a $5 fee for consideration. You can pay your $5 fee at okiemodern.com/donate. We will confirm payment before reading your submission. You are welcome to donate more than $5, but this will not impact your chances of winning. We will just be very, very grateful!
If you would like to submit multiple stories, you can, but please pay separate submission fees for each story.
We are awarding a $31 prize (payed with Venmo or Paypal) to the winner. The winning story will be published on our blog and the winning author will be interviewed for a feature.
Max word count: 3,000
Upload: word file
Formatting: double-spaced
Stories need not take place in Oklahoma. As usual, we do ask that all submitters have an Oklahoma connection (you were born here, passed through the state and it made an impact on you, or you live/work here).
WHAT WE LIKE:
This contest will be judged by our Editor-in-Chief, Elizabeth J. Wenger and our Managing Editor, Maddie Roper.
Wenger loves camp, retellings of folktales, and body horror (!make it gross + grotesque!). Her favorite horror films are "Jennifer's Body" (2009), "Border" (2018), and "Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma" (2026).
Maddie loves witches, ghosts, hauntings, and towns where something's just not quite right!!! Her favorite horror movies are "Poltergeist" (1982) and "Practical Magic" (1998).
Basically, all we ask is that you make us laugh, cry, or weep from fear. We don't think we're asking for that much!!!

Happy Halloween from the Okie Modern team!
